Goal 8 - Decent working conditions and economic growth

Half of all people who work have a precarious job. It may get too little in salary or no money if they get sick. Safe and fair working conditions are important for everyone in society. We must do everything we can to stop child labor, human trafficking and modern-day slavery.

When alcohol abuse increases in developing countries, children who would otherwise go to school are forced into work. They are often exploited and exposed to dangers. That should not be the case.

The cost of abuse in societies is so great every year that it affects the economies of entire countries; 156 billion Euros in Europe, 249 billion dollars in the US, and about 10-12% of GDP in South Africa. In India, the cost of alcohol (injuries, violence, traffic accidents, ill health, loss of production, etc.) is more than what the country spends on health care each year. Surely it feels a little unnecessary?

Tip!

Be curious!

Read about working conditions for people around the world. Where do your clothes come from and what do the working conditions look like there?

Visit a workplace!

Ask your parents or another adult if you can come to work one day. Then you will learn more about what a workplace looks like and works.

Act fairly!

Avoid shopping from stores and companies that you know use child labor or treat their employees unfairly.
