Alcohol and violence

Violence causes great suffering for the individual and high costs to society. There are many different factors behind violence - alcohol consumption is one of them.

There are a large number of studies showing a link between alcohol consumption and the occurrence of violence. This applies to violence in close relationships as well as sexual violence and violence against children. At the population level, one can see a clear connection between the total alcohol consumption and the amount of violence in society.

Alcohol policy measures and other alcohol prevention work at local or national level helps to reduce the risk of violence, including through price, marketing and accessibility regulations.
