Goal 1 - No poverty

Being poor is not just about missing out on money. It can also be not being allowed to go to school, get a job or to be allowed to say or think what you want. Poverty is declining in the world, but despite this, about 1,3 billion people in the world are poor. About half of them are children.

Alcohol and drugs make it harder for people to get out of poverty, and people who are poor are more likely to become addicted. You can talk about a poverty trap.
In Sri Lanka, the very poorest spend the largest share of their income on alcohol and tobacco. Many men go to the bar after a day of hard work and drink up large parts of their salary. But what provides relief for the moment hinders sustainable, positive development.

Often a puff is needed in the right direction to get out of the trap. It offers our partner organizations. With increased knowledge, changed attitudes and rules regarding alcohol sales, the problems decrease.

Tell us about your interpretation

With my illustration I want to describe the injustice in the concept of poverty. That one's life can look equal. But based on what place you were born and who you are, the differences in security can be huge. If the scale you end up in is built of wood or mortar, it makes a big difference to your destiny.
