The government! Don't risk civil society's opportunities to act!

Published 2024-01-22
A large part of Sweden's aid goes via Swedish organisations. Organizations that are experts in children's rights, women's organization, environmental issues or, like us, alcohol issues. By collaborating directly with local organizations that are passionate about the same issues as us, good relationships and reliable, good assistance are created. We reach many people! We make a difference!
But we are also scrutinized heavily. Every aid kroner must be accounted for and every contribution evaluated. It is good! For that, qualified personnel are required and there are already clear guidelines for how much can go to the organization in relation to how much should go to aid. We think that is right. We are not doing this to benefit shareholders or to pile up money.

The Swedish people believe in us

The Swedish people have high confidence in the aid that is mediated through Swedish organisations. Greater than for what is distributed by other actors, for example the state. Therefore, we think it is worrying that the government now wants to set higher requirements for the organizations' own fundraising - so high that many risk being forced to stop their aid work.
That would cause fewer people to receive support. And that fewer rights are noticed. Basically, an active and pluralistic civil society is a foundation for a healthy democracy.

Please share our letter

Together with other organisations, we have written an open letter to the government in which we urge them to think about the consequences of their decisions. Feel free to share!
