In Kumi District, a region in eastern Uganda facing severe challenges due to gang violence and rampant alcohol abuse, the IOGT-NTO Movement in cooperation with the Uganda Girl Guides Association (UGGA) launched a transformative social project. This initiative, rooted in community engagement and education, aims to address the underlying issues contributing to the cycle of violence and substance misuse.
Kumi District is plagued by criminal gangs, locally referred to as Ikoc, or ”termites.” These gangs primarily consist of unemployed young men who resort to robbery, murder, and other criminal activities as a means of survival. Their actions are often exacerbated by alcohol consumption, which serves as both a catalyst for violence and a coping mechanism for their challenging circumstances. The pervasive nature of alcohol abuse has created a toxic environment that not only threatens the safety of the community but also undermines the potential for youth development and education.
Upon launching this initiative, we were met with enthusiastic support from local authorities, including the police, who recognized the pressing need for intervention. Local law enforcement officials expressed optimism that our project could play a pivotal role in curbing the activities of the Ikoc gangs. They believe that by fostering a greater sense of community, promoting educational opportunities, and encouraging parental involvement in children’s schooling, we can significantly reduce gang-related crime and create a safer environment for all.
Kisakye Mastulah, a representative from UGGA, stated, “Alcohol is the trigger for all the problems we see in society.” This insight highlights the critical link between alcohol abuse and the social issues plaguing Kumi District. By addressing the root causes of these problems, our project seeks to provide a holistic solution that not only mitigates immediate violence but also lays the groundwork for sustainable community development.
By addressing the intertwined issues of gang violence and alcohol abuse in Kumi District, we are not only tackling immediate threats but also working towards building a more stable and supportive environment for future generations. Through education, community support, and collaborative action, we believe that positive change is possible, and we are committed to fostering a brighter future for the youth of Kumi District.
