War does not end when the guns fall silent. During the HR Days, we organized a seminar that shed light on the long-term consequences of war for people and societies – consequences that often live on long after the armed conflict has ended. Now you can watch the seminar afterwards via the live stream below.
The seminar brought together Adis Arnautovic from our partner organization CEM in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Annette Lyth from the Swedish National Defense University and Åsa Regnèr from the Red Cross in a conversation about war-related trauma, silence around emotions and how alcohol use affects men, women and children. With examples from Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other parts of the world, the panel showed how untreated psychological wounds and destructive masculine norms can have profound and long-lasting consequences – for individuals, families and entire societies.
The discussion had a particular focus on the vulnerability of men in war and post-war, and on what happens when support and opportunities for processing are lacking. The panel emphasized how early and preventive interventions for men in trauma are not only crucial for their own healing, but can also protect children, women and other loved ones – and contribute to more resilient societies in the long term.
