The IOGT-NTO movement's international work is now taking a historic step forward. Sida has decided to sign a three-year agreement with the IOGT-NTO movement for a total of SEK 63,3 million to support the work of preventing alcohol-related harm and strengthening civil societies around the world.
The program; Civic Strength for Sustainable Change – From Local communities to national policy, preventing alcohol harm and strengthening democracy, will strengthen the ability of civil society organizations to prevent the harmful effects of alcohol and contribute to better public health, increased gender equality and democratic development through political advocacy, changed social norms and knowledge-raising efforts in local communities.
The agreement from Sida is a recognition of alcohol prevention as a priority development and global health issue, as well as of the professionalism that the movement has built up over many years. The application process has been long, tough and involved a review of all parts of the IOGT-NTO movement's organization, working methods and achieved results.

– This is recognition of our expertise, our long-term work and our unique role as an aid actor. This shows that we are a credible and relevant actor in global public health work and the new agreement makes it possible for us to increase efforts to protect people from the harmful effects of alcohol and strengthen civil societies in our partner countries. We will continue to fight poverty, inequality and ill health, says Johanna Davén, Secretary General.
Andrine Winther, chairwoman, emphasizes that Sida's support enables the IOGT-NTO movement to make a concrete difference in the lives of individuals and families as well as for communities.
– We meet families where half of the daily wage goes to alcohol. For the children, this means a lack of access to food, school supplies and clothing, which leads to an uncertain future. Together we can change that and break the vicious circle of poverty and addiction.
The agreement marks the start of a new phase
Over the next three years, the IOGT-NTO movement will be able to step up its work, strengthen the work of partners, and further highlight the role of alcohol as an obstacle to the development of people and societies.
Examples of what the program should achieve:
Civil society:
13 partner organizations will be strengthened in their advocacy, methodology, financial sustainability and governance. 80% of them will achieve international standards for organizational capacity, allowing them to mobilize local communities more effectively to prevent alcohol-related harm.
Alcohol policy:
Civil society organizations will influence and contribute to the adoption and implementation of 10 national and 70 local alcohol policy regulations for stronger protection against alcohol-related harm and better public health.
Equality:
Through 170 initiatives to prevent gender-based violence linked to alcohol, over 115,000 women and girls are strengthened in their rights and opportunities to live free from violence and inequality.
Health and well-being:
The program implements 1,500 local health promotion initiatives that engage 80,000 children and 160,000 young people and adults in work for health, safety and reduced alcohol consumption.
Members are involved in the success
Johanna Davén emphasizes that the agreement with Sida is a joint success for the entire IOGT-NTO movement:
– Without the movement's support, non-profit commitment and financial contributions, the agreement with Sida would not have been possible.
