Mothers of the World: Rasika

In northern Sri Lanka we collaborate with the organization ADIC. In the village of Colombo, we run, with support from Radiohjälpen, a leisure club where children learn about the effects of alcohol, children's rights and life skills. The project also strengthens parents, especially mothers, through discussion groups and community.
Rasika lives in Colombo and has three sons. Her husband had an alcohol addiction and often drank up the entire family income and even became violent when he drank. Through ADIC, Rasika got a safe place for her children, and through the mothers' groups she got tools to deal with the situation.
- In the mothers' group, I learned to talk to my husband in a different way than before. The children also received help to put into words what was difficult about their father's drinking.

While her husband was receiving treatment, Rasika took on the responsibility of supporting the family. She began saving money and food in case her husband relapsed.
– Today, everything is much better for us. We have been able to afford to put two windows in our house and have started a small kiosk where we sell vegetables and groceries. I have also bought a bicycle for my husband, so that he can take the children to school. The most important thing is that we no longer argue and that he has become friends with his children.
Rasika is grateful for ADIC and describes it as the key to change in her family. Even now, when life is more stable, she continues to be part of the mothers' group to support others.
