BCK: Blue Cross Kenya

Blue Cross – Kenya is a membership organization with its headquarters in Kisumu City. The members are independent, non-political and non-denominational Christian associations that form the organization to assist marginalized populations and people harmed by, or at risk of being harmed by alcohol and drugs.

BCK implements programs in the field of alcohol and substance abuse prevention in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, Africa Union 2063 agenda, Kenya vision 2030 and County Integrated Development Plan. Project activities are run in grass root settings in various locations and include alcohol and drug prevention, counseling for people with alcohol and substance abuse problems, as well as advocacy and lobbying. BCK has the vision of maintaining sober communities and a mission to mobilize alcohol prevention, treatment, and after care intervention for the whole family. The target group that BCK works with are children, youth and families affected by alcohol and drug use/abuse in Kenya. its major focus being on prevention, harm reduction, awareness and treatment in Kisumu County and its environs.

The project in the Slums of Bandani in Kisumu West Sub County that BCK is implementing in partnership with IOGT-NTO Movement is focused on making a tangible difference in the lives of children from alcohol-affected families. The aim is to enhance their quality of life and health through a multifaceted approach. One key aspect of the project involves educating children, aged 7-12 years, about the harmful effects of alcohol and drugs. By providing them with this knowledge, we aim to empower them to make informed choices and avoid succumbing to substance abuse in the future.

In addition to education, children are also engaged in art and digital skills training. These creative outlets not only provide an opportunity for self-expression and personal growth but also offer practical skills that can potentially lead to future employment opportunities.

Furthermore, the project includes advocacy efforts to ensure the full implementation of the Kisumu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act 2014. By sensitizing the community on the importance of protecting children from alcohol and substance abuse, we are working towards creating a safer environment for vulnerable youth. Through the awareness campaigns on the Kisumu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, specifically highlighting articles that protect children's rights, we are striving to create a more supportive and nurturing community for children in Bandani.
